Botox Aftercare

Botox is one of the most well-known anti-aging treatments. It is incredibly successful at eliminating unwanted signs of aging for both men and women of all skin types.

If you’ve had Botox or are considering it, you should know how to get the most from this powerful treatment.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is a neurotoxin that stops muscle contractions in the targeted area. Once your muscles have relaxed, the skin above them relaxes as well. Your result is smoother skin and a much younger-looking appearance.

Does Botox Treat All Wrinkles?

Botox responds exceptionally well to dynamic wrinkles, while it can also reduce the appearance of static wrinkles, though not as well unless combined with fillers or other treatments better suited for this type. What exactly are dynamic and static wrinkles?

We are born with dynamic wrinkles, and they become more noticeable as we age. They are the wrinkles that are evident when you make facial expressions. Dynamic wrinkles include crow’s feet, smile lines, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles.

Static wrinkles are evident when your face is resting and are the result of a decrease in collagen and elastin. Gravity plays a part in the appearance of these types of wrinkles as well.

What Side Effects Does Botox Have?

Side effects with Botox are minimal and many patients don’t experience them at all. However, minor bruising, swelling and small bumps can occur after Botox injections.

In rare cases, headaches have been reported, but they are easily managed with an OTC pain reliever. There is no cause to worry as any side effects you may experience do go away quickly on their own.

How Long Do Botox Injections Last?

This varies for each patient, as everyone is unique. Generally, Botox lasts for at least 12 to 16 weeks. However, if this is your first treatment, it might not last quite as long.

Is It Safe to Continue Having Botox Injections?

Because Botox does not accumulate in your system and because side effects are rare, it is safe to continue having Botox. It is recommended you schedule your injections every 12 weeks, or if you feel you need them more often, consult with your provider.

What Happens When Botox Begins to Wear Off?

You won’t feel any pain or discomfort at all. When your Botox begins to wear off, your muscles will simply work as they did before your injections. This does mean the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles return as well.

What Can I Not Do After Botox?

Botox aftercare isn’t difficult, and while you won’t need any downtime for recovery, there are some activities you should modify for a short period of time. For the four hours following injections, you should not:

  • Rub or massage your face
  • Have any type of facial
  • Lie on your face or engage in activities that require you to bend over
  • Put on headwear that may fit tightly across your forehead
  • Consume alcohol (for at least 24 hours)

I Usually Have Regular Facial Appointments. How Long Should I Wait to Have a Facial After Botox?

Facials are an outstanding element to incorporate into your regular skincare regime.

To make sure you achieve your skin goals, it is recommended you wait 24 hours after Botox injections to have a facial.

Why Must I Avoid Alcohol After Botox?

Alcohol thins the blood. Thin blood can contribute to bruising. So, while alcohol doesn’t interact with Botox in a negative manner, can help minimize bruising by abstaining from drinking.

Can I Exercise After Botox?

Again, the four-hour rule comes into play with regard to exercise. While you should avoid all exercise for at least four hours, you can move into it gradually.

After four hours, you can engage in light activity / exercise including jogging, walking, upright yoga positions, and gardening.

Strenuous activity / exercise should be put on hold for at least 24 hours. This means exercises like weight training, long-distance running, or cross-training should be avoided.

Will I Be Able to Touch My Face and Wear Makeup After Botox?

It’s fine to touch your face after your injections as long as you are careful about pressure. You can continue your skincare regime as usual, but avoid harsh chemicals or anything abrasive for a few days.

While you should avoid makeup for at least an hour after your Botox treatments, it’s fine to continue wearing it as you normally would. Again, you should be mindful of how much pressure you are putting on your face.

Is It Safe to Fly After Having Botox Injections?

Yes, it is. You should not experience any adverse reactions to Botox from flying.

What Do I Do If I Don’t Get the Botox Results I’d Hoped For?

Your Botox specialist should be available to address any concerns you have after your injections, and you are welcome to schedule a follow-up visit at any time. If you’re new to Botox, keep in mind it might take more than one appointment to figure out what works best for you.

Botox typically takes three to five days to show visible Botox results. It is suggested you wait at least a full 14 days for your Botox to settle before you have more injections.
